And so it begins...
Today an itch that I've had for a good two or three years is finally getting scratched.
Let me introduce myself. I'm Angela. I'm a geek and researchaholic - and I have a hair-brained idea.
I've always had an interest in architecture. Blame it on my dad, who's love of old things and design has infiltrated my DNA. I go through cycles of curiosity where I research to my heart's content different subjects, and this cycle has been my local Historical Heritage Database. Homes and buildings galore, but no real way to discover the history behind them outside of a few reference books at our local library. I believe this MUST change if our future generations are to have ANY interest in our history. Making this information available through a quick web search is my goal. But I cannot do it alone. Really, I'm a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom of two boys and I run a knitwear design business. My hands are a little full.
That's where you come in.
You, my fellow Portlandians, Vancouverites, and all from the Tri-County (and Clark County, Washington!) area, are the key to making this website a reality. Your pictures, your stories, your research are what's going to make this site a go-to place for all those other curious folks. Whether they be researching for school or just out for a stroll in their neighborhood, they are going to be able to come here and see at least one historical image, at least one current image, a decently sourced article about the property, and what that property means to the surrounding area - even if it's anecdotal. Each property will be in a 'neighborhood' tab, so if someone wants to take a stroll about a certain area, they can see exactly what properties are in the vicinity. I also hope to have a "R.I.P." tab, for those wonders who have 'given their lives' for the progression of our little metropolis.
So, how do you contribute? For the time being, there are two ways. First, check out our facebook site. I will be checking it often (as in most days). Alternatively, you may email me by filling out the form below. Let me know if you have a new submission or an edit to a current property. Images are GREATLY appreciated. So are personal anecdotes. I will be cross-referencing any information received for accuracy, but I'm all for having a bit of lore! It should be noted here that all submissions are volunteered: this is a community site for the enrichment of others, not for profit. In otherwords, it's a pet project on steroids!
Eventually I hope that this idea will take off and be available for not just homes, but other buildings in our area - and beyond.
